כדי שלא תהא חיה קופצת ולעביד חריץ ולא לעביד בן חריץ איידי דרווח קיימא בגויה וקפצה ולעביד בן חריץ ולא לעביד חריץ איידי דקטין קיימא אשפתיה וקפצה וכמה בין חריץ לבן חריץ טפח:

in order that an animal may not jump [over the wall]. Let, then, the big trench be made<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The big trench alone should suffice to prevent the animal from jumping over the wall. ');">¹</span> and not [also] the small one? — Since it is wide, [the animal] might stand in it and jump. Then let the smaller trench be made and not the bigger one? Since it is small, [the animal] might stand on the [outer] edge and jump. How much [space must there be] between the bigger, and the smaller trench? — One handbreadth.

<b><i>MISHNAH</i></b>. SOME [RELATIVES] INHERIT [FROM], AND TRANSMIT [TO EACH OTHER];<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Whoever of these dies first transmits his estate to the other, and whoever survives inherits it. מתני׳ <big><strong>יש</strong></big> נוחלין ומנחילין ויש נוחלין ולא מנחילין מנחילין ולא נוחלין לא נוחלין ולא מנחילין

BUT DO NOT TRANSMIT;<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Their estates to these relatives if they die first. A MAN [INHERITS FROM] HIS MOTHER AND [FROM] HIS WIFE [BUT DOES NOT TRANSMIT HIS ESTATE TO THEM<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Because the relatives on his father's side are entitled to the inheritance of his estate. Why does the Mishnah teach first, THE FATHER [INHERITS FROM, AND TRANSMITS TO HIS] SONS, let it first teach, THE SONS [INHERIT FROM, AND TRANSMIT TO THEIR] FATHER, for, in the first place,<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' Lit., 'one'. ');">¹¹</span> one should not commence with [something suggestive of] misfortune<span class="x" onmousemove="('comment',' The death of a son in his father's lifetime. ');">¹²</span>
